Earth observation data quality

As Australia's reliance on satellite Earth observation data grows, the consequence of inaccuracies (introduced through inadvertent errors or deliberate manipulation) in the data increases; particularly when used by governments and industry to inform investment, management and policy decisions. The risks of inaccuracies are replicated globally and will continue to increase as the Earth observation sector becomes more commercialised.

Indigenous natural resource management and livelihoods

Jon Altman is the Oceania regional leader on the major international comparative project: Centre pour la conservation et le développement autochtones alternatifs (CCDAA) or Centre for Indigenous Conservation and Development Alternatives (CICADA) administered by McGill University, Montréal, Québec, under the overall direction of Professor Colin Scott.

Alternate economic futures for remote Indigenous Australia

This research focuses on the theorisation of economic hybridity as an alternative to incorporation in market capitalism especially in remote Australia but also elsewhere where indigenous minorities are seeking to develop viable alternatives to late capitalism while living on their ancestral lands.

Climate finance initiative

Only a rapid transition to a low carbon economy will prevent dangerous climate change and its catastrophic consequences. Achieving such a transition will require vast amounts of finance (some US$7.7 trillion per year) for climate action: finance which only the private sector has the ability to provide. But scaling up climate finance — for low-carbon infrastructure, renewable energy, energy efficiency and other mitigation measures — would involve transforming a finance sector that has only recently begun its journey towards sustainability.

What do cities have to learn from each other about the best tools to get to 100% renewable city-wide electricity?

Globally, many national governments such as those in Australia and the USA are reluctant to take meaningful action on climate change. However, cities in these and other countries are stepping up to fill this gap, and committing to meaningful emissions reductions to limit harmful warming.

Maximizing consumer ability to manage electricity demand

This project was supported by the Icon Water and ActewAGL Endowment Fund. Working with ActewAGL, the research team evaluated the extent to which poorly insulated homes limit people’s ability to control bills when on demand management rates such as time-of-use. This project built on prior research by Dr White which established that time-of-use rates, while valuable for integrating intermittent renewable generation, can lead to disproportionately large bill increases for groups more likely to live in poorly insulated homes that don’t maintain temperatures well.

Not only does the US have enormous global influence, but it is also the largest producer of oil and gas with the largest reserves of coal on the planet. However, it is hard to imagine an energy revolution in the US taking place without the support of business.
