In July, 2023, Precilla Anna-Kaii Lawrence graduated with a Master of Regulation and Governance from the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the Australian National University. She shares with us her rewarding experience from studying at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP).

Why did you want to do a Master of Regulation and Governance at RegNet?

As a US military leader, understanding interdisciplinary approaches and how they all contribute to a creating responsive regulatory framework for how the military responds on a day-to-day basis is important. When I was notified of my posting to Australia, I started to research the colleges in Canberra, and based on my research ANU had the strongest reputation for its expertise in the field of regulation and governance. Studying at a prestigious institution can enhance ones academic and professional profile, hence, I wanted to ensure I made well use of the new opportunity I was afforded.

What was your experience at CAP like? How did this help you achieve your career goals?

I have always been interested in the Indo-Pacific. It is one of the most relevant regions as it pertains to global policies and their impacts on other regions in the world. The Master of Regulation and Governance from RegNet at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific provided me with specialised knowledge and skills in the field of regulation and governance that is valuable to what I do as a US military leader and as a military paralegal. The program provided a comprehensive understanding of regulation and governance issues which equipped me with a holistic perspective. I specifically appreciated the interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from various disciplines such as law, public policy, economics, and management. Throughout the program the networking opportunities were incredible; I had the opportunity to learn from various stakeholders in the regulatory field and connect with other students who have first-hand experience with compliance and regulation studies.

Who has helped or inspired you?

The faculty members, especially Professor Kate Henne, and fellow students, inspired my motivation to complete the program through their expertise, passion, knowledge, and overall good attitude towards the specific study. The chance to connect with faculty members, fellow students, and professionals in the field, helped me to build valuable relationships that I know will benefit me throughout my career, even after relocating back to the US, after this posting in Australia.

What are you currently working on? What are your plans now that you’ve finished your Master’s?

As I progress in my military career as a senior leader, I have been afforded a unique opportunity to work with the US Congress to gain a deeper understanding of legislation and its impact on the military. The specialized knowledge gained from this program will allow me to respond with effective regulatory requirements to emerging issues relevant to the military. I plan to stay up to date with the latest developments, trends, news publications, and relevant issues that affect the military, because, one day, I hope to be placed in a regulatory and compliance section within the military to guide future operations to continue in the fight for the prosperity of all people. I am hoping to advance my knowledge by completing a PhD program in either Government, Regulation, or Policy.

What is a piece of advice you would give to those studying a Master of Regulation and Governance?

My advice would be to embrace interdisciplinarity and diversity of thought. Regulation and governance issues are often complex, requiring insights from various disciplines. Take advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of the program by engaging with different perspectives and incorporating diverse approaches into your studies. This will aid in developing a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter and enhance one's problem-solving skills.  In the world we live today, many regulatory frameworks are derived from numerous voices and experiences in the field, hence, I would also advise to seek opportunities to gain practical experience alongside your academic studies such as internships, research projects, or part-time positions that allows one to apply gained knowledge in real-world contexts.
